3 skincare products that are helping me fight maskne

A few months ago, I wrote a post featuring my drugstore skincare favorites. I spoke about clearing my skin after years of struggling with acne. Well, not too long after that post, my skin took a turn for the worst. I couldn’t figure at what was going on; I was completing my routine skincare and following my dermatologist’s recommendations. It wasn’t until I looked at the timeline that I realized why my skin was acting up. It all happened at the beginning of the pandemic. I realized my breakout was caused by a combination of stress and constantly wearing a mask with makeup on. I’m so glad to be recovering (once again) and to feel confident in my skin again. In this post, I’m sharing the three products that I believed helped clear my maskne.

After several weeks of trying to clear my skin, I returned to my dermatologist. She recommended that I limit stress and continue to use the products she prescribed the first time (Tazorac & Onexton). She also advised me to ditch my toner and to never use one again. I did some research later and found a lot of dermatologists advise against the use of toners.

Dr. Jennifer Chwalek, a board-certified dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology, told HuffPost “Many toners contain alcohol which is drying (which may be fine if you have oilier, acne-prone skin).” Instead, I spritz my face with rose water in the morning before applying vitamin C and SPF.

I took my dermatologist’s advice and added a few products of my own. Now, my skin is getting back to normal. I still have a few dark spots to clear up, but I’d much rather complexion issues than texture issues.

Vitamin C Serum

I’ve used different oils throughout the years and knew the benefits of Vitamin C, but I’ve failed to stay consistent with it in the past. During one of my Ulta runs, I picked up a bottle of the Mad Hippie’s Vitamin C Serum and fell in love. It’s very light and not oily. Recently, I started using the Artnaturals Vitamin C serum and love it just as much.

I apply my Vitamin C serum right after double cleansing my face. I like to let it absorb into my skin first before applying my second product.

Here are some others I recommend

Pomegranate Oil

Now, this oil is a game-changer for me. An old classmate of mine reached out to me to try some products she created. She struggled with acne for some time and decided to take matters into her own hand and experimented with some ingredients. Through trial and error, she created some products that helped clear her skin. In turn, she decided to start a business selling those products. Long story short, she reached out and wanted my feedback. Little did she know, I was in dire need of products that work. I started using this oil twice a day and never looked back. I can confidently say that this product played a huge role in clearing my skin. According to who??, 100% pure pomegranate oil offers regenerative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties that promote bouncy, glowing skin.”

I apply it right after my Vitamin C oil.

I highly suggest supporting a small black-owned business and ordering from Jamaican Glow Skincare.

Brightening eye cream

I’m here to tell you that you are never too young to start using eye cream. I was first introduced to this Sephora brightening eye cream as part of a collaboration I did with Sephora to promote their new Clean Beauty line. The line contains some amazing products, but one item I continuously use is eye cream. It’s super lightweight, and I noticed the changes instantly.

I apply the eye cream after moisturizing and right before my sunscreen.

I’m working on a YouTube video of my entire skincare. Subscribe to my channel to be notified when that video is live.

What’s the one product you’ve used that helped your skin significantly? Let me know!

Your site won’t let me order! When I try to add an item to the cart, it says “there are no items in your cart.” Won’t let me order!
