3 Tips for Building a Work Wardrobe

Some of the links in this post are affiliate links.

As a fresh post-grad in a corporate setting, I had to learn how to build a work wardrobe and do so on a budget.

Before my current job, I worked in retail at a grocery store that required a uniform. This was a complete change for me: I learned quickly how expensive business attire can be. So in this post, I’m sharing with you guys three tips for building your work wardrobe and the places I love to shop.

Start with The Basics

When I first got hired, I didn’t have money to ball out at Banana Republic, JCrew, and all the other well-known stores. I visited my local thrift store and purchased a few blouses, sweaters, chino style pants, and blazers. I found timeless basic pieces that were in great condition and took them to the dry cleaners to have them tailored.

When I think of the essential pieces to start with, I think of:

  • Chinos
  • Suit pants
  • Sweaters
  • Non-Slip Tank tops
  • Blazers
  • Dresses

Invest in Key Pieces

A few paychecks later, when I was able to splurge a little, I began to invest in clothes that I knew would last. I remember my first work-wear shopping spree was to Zara and I spent $200 on five items. Although the shoes and clothes I purchased that day are still going strong, I learned how to shop these well-known stores while on a budget.

Here are some tips for shopping well-known stores like Jcrew, Banana Republic, Loft:

  • Shop the outlet stores rather than the regular store. This week, I visited my local Banana Republic outlet store and everything was 50% off. Meanwhile, the regular store had a sale going on for 35% off.
  • Shop the sales rack. When I walk into a store, the first thing I do is head straight to the back. The sales are always hiding in the back.

Add Your Own Style

We’ve seen the people waddling in their heels walking in to work. If heels are not your thing, don’t wear them. Invest in some nice loafers. I think it’s really important to show off your style through your work clothes. I don’t believe there’s a cookie-cutter way to dress professionally or business casual. My style is one of the ways that I express myself so I don’t shy away from showing that in the workplace.

My Favorite Stores to Shop for Work Clothes

  • Old Navy – Don’t sleep on Old Navy. You can find the best pants from Old Navy. The best part is, if you shop on the site, it has a wide range for plus size, petite and tall.
  • Zara – Zara can be a bit pricey for the young professionals and those of us who are on a budget, but when I have the extra money to spare, the quality is worth the extra few dollars.
  • Banana Republic – This is another store that I love because of the size range. As a petite girl, I need my pants in petite for them to fit well.
  • Express – it has frequent sales and great quality.
  • Asos- Asos is my go-to for all types of clothing, but it also has a nice range of work attire as well.
  • Discount stores like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Burlington.
  • My local Thrift Store.
