Switching The Gear Off Neutral

Every spring/summer, I write these posts about wanting to add more colors to my wardrobe, and two weeks later, I’m back to wearing Neutrals. This spring, I’m making a serious effort.

I came to realize that there are two main reasons why I gravitate towards neutrals.

  1. Neutrals always look more luxurious. When I go thrift shopping, I mainly go after neutral items because neutrals always look more polished, and they are timeless.
  2. I grew up believing that dark skin women shouldn’t wear bright colors. Society made me think as a dark skin woman; I had to “play it safe” when it came to colors. Recently, I’ve been inspired by women like @simplycyn, who is a dark skin woman that’s not afraid to wear color. She’s not afraid to mix prints, colors and look fantastic. Her style has given me the confidence to try colors, prints, and different patterns.

Since this is my year of “Fuck playing safe,” my goal is to test out colors I would never wear or colors I probably never thought would look good on me.

These looks were my first color blocking looks, and I love how they came out.

The oversized dress look has been trending for a few seasons now, and I’ve always wanted to try it but was afraid I would look ridiculous. I spotted this one recently while shopping at H&M and loved how it looks. I wear a size medium, believe it or not, and this is a size XS.

I paired this dress with these mustard yellow shoes that I purchased at H&M for my trip to Cuba.

Sweater – Asos | Pants & Shoes – Zara

I paired this Asos orange sweater with one of my favorite Zara leather pants and these Zara sandal heels.
