Hey!!

Ever wonder why whenever you go to a thrift store, you either end up with tons of mom jeans and pointless novelties and never able to  find anything worth wearing? Or how that one vintage-obsessed friend always find all the gems and all you seem to find is oversized smelly clothes. Today, I’m here with 5 tips to make your thrifting experience a much easier one.

5 Tips that will change your thrifting experience

  • Have patience –

This is highly important. If you’re in a rush or have someone waiting for you, I can guarantee you , you will miss out. Most gems at the thrift store are usually out of plain sight. It’s where you least expected that you’ll find that bomber jacket you’ve been looking for. Go to the thrift store on a slow day, where you have nothing planned and have a few hours to spare.

  • Be Gender Neutral –

Remember what I said about finding gems in unexpected places, Yes!  don’t get stuck in the women section and forget about the other sections. If you’re petite, check the children section and not just the little girl section but the boy section too. Check every section, you’ll be surprised the gems you’ll find hidden in the men section.

  • Re-design and Re-purpose –

Be creative, don’t knock it just because it’s a size too big or too long. It might look like a dress your great grandmother should be wearing now. Imagine how it would look if you were to get it tailored or turn it into something different. Recently I purchased a pair of jeans that I thought looked hideous and grandma-ish, but from my thrifting experience. I knew living it behind was not an option. Simply by cutting a few inches off the hem, I was able to give it a more modern twist. Check it out!

  • Keep an open mind –

I feel like this is also extremely important. keep in mind that the thrift store is not Sacks Fifth nor Urban Outfitter, you won’t be able to tell a sell rep what you’re looking for ( you’ll be lucky to find any help at most thrift stores). It’s a scavenger hunt and honestly. You might not find what you looking for the first time around. If you don’t find anything the first time, go back again another day preferably when there’s new inventory. Find out what day your local thrift stores get new inventory and plan your trip around that time.

  • Discounts Galore –

Who would think that a thrift store; that already sell things for less, would have sales. Yes, believe it or not, they do. I’m not sure about every thrift stores, but for the ones I go to there are days of the week that are discount days. For example, on Sunday is ” green tag” day, so for every clothing, you find with a green tag are additionally 50% off. Get friendly with the workers at your local thrift store and find out about upcoming deals and get familiar with the store. Next thing you know you’ll be a vintage pro.

Hopefully, these tips help your next or first trip to the thrift store be less intimidating. If you found these tips helpful let me know in the comments or on twitter ( Bellarosablog_), also what’s the most embarrassing or funny things you ever experienced while thrifting.
